”Carte Des Isles De Madere Et Porto Santo” Hand-coloured detailed map of Madeira and Porto Santo. Shows Funchal and the Fort, along with other place names, originates from a Dutch edition of Bellin's Atlas. Published in Amsterdam, 1770. Jakob van der Schley was a skilled draftsman and engraver who operated out of Amsterdam and had&nbsp;strong ties with&nbsp;the Hague. He was trained by Bernard Picart&nbsp;and his style resembles that of the elder man. Van der Schely&nbsp;was known for intricately engraved portraits and frontispieces. The map covers the entire African continent as well as adjacent parts of Arabia and the Mediterranean. Throughout, Johnson identifies various cities, towns, rivers and assortment of additional topographical details.&nbsp; Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) was an American cartographer and publisher known for producing detailed and visually striking atlases and maps in the mid-19th century.
