144 Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) - Rare Set of 4 scenographic sketches for Eduardo De Filippo’s "Il Contratto"
4 SCENOGRAPHIC SKETCHES
The rare collection of 4 graphic works includes preparatory sketches and drafts for the creation of set designs for Eduardo De Filippo’s "Il Contratto". The premiere took place in 1967 at the San Ferdinando Theater in Naples.
Although these are preparatory drawings, they showcase the remarkable artistic quality of Renato Guttuso, evident in his bold black lines that vividly depict tangible realities. This series reflects two key elements of Guttuso's art: his realism, characterized by detailed representation, and his precise exploration of volumes and geometric forms across multiple perspectives.
Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and passed away in Rome in 1987, was an artist deeply engaged in politics and social issues. His art stemmed from socialist ideals and indignation against social injustice and abuses of power. He was part of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style and creating his "social art." His most notable works of Neorealist art include masterpieces like Fucilazione in Campagna and Fuga dall’Etna. He was also elected senator twice, in 1976 and 1979, for the Italian Communist Party.
