Max the Birman Ernst was created by australian artist Martin Sharp whilst resident in London between 1966-8 as a homage to the artist Max Ernst. This rare psychedelic vintage work is based on a sado-masochistic image from Ernst’s 1934 collage novel "Une Semaine de Bonté, Chapter four—Wednesday; Blood".

Martin Sharp (1942-2013) was an Australian artist known for his vibrant and psychedelic artwork, which became iconic in the 1960s counterculture movement. He was also a prominent figure in the world of music, creating memorable album covers and posters for bands such as Cream and illustrating for the influential underground magazine Oz.
