7361 François Valentijn – Iran - Ruins of the Palace of Darius in Persepolis – Engraving

This engraving, from François Valentijn’s seminal work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, is a topographical view of the monumental ruins of Persepolis, located in ancient Persia. The illustration depicts the remains of the Palace of Darius with its towering columns and extensive stone platform, set against a backdrop of mountainous terrain. The scene, which includes small figures to show scale, is a testament to the destructive order of Alexander the Great and serves as a valuable historical document of the state of the ruins in the early 18th century. The print notes that it is based on an original drawing by Herbert de Jager.
François Valentijn was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and historian, primarily known for his extensive work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (Old and New East-India). This monumental five-volume work was a comprehensive survey of the Dutch East Indies and included detailed descriptions of the geography, customs, and natural history of the region. His work is considered a cornerstone of early Western ethnography of Asia.
