7317 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – First Square of Batavia Castle / Jakarta - Indonesia – Engraving

This detailed engraving depicts the first Square of Batavia Castle, as seen in the 18th century. The print showcases two rows of grand buildings with distinctive tiled roofs, leading towards a more distant structure, creating a sense of perspective down a formal urban space. Birds are visible in the sky above. This illustration originates from François Valentijn’s monumental work, "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" (Old and New East-India), published between 1724 and 1726. It serves as a valuable visual record of the architecture and urban planning of Batavia (present-day Jakarta), the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company in the East Indies.
François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and prolific author whose extensive travels and research in the Dutch East Indies formed the basis of his encyclopedic publication. His multi-volume "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" is celebrated for its comprehensive accounts of the history, geography, ethnography, and natural history of the region. Richly illustrated with numerous maps and views, Valentijn's work remains an indispensable primary source for the study of the Dutch colonial empire and Asian trade during the early 18th century.
