7275 Sebastian Munster (1488–1552) – Smelting Ore – Woodcut (c. 1550)
This woodcut is from Sebastian Munster's work Cosmographia. The illustration depicts two scenes from the process of smelting ore, with the German title "Schmelze." The top shows men working at a water wheel, and the bottom shows men working with a smelting furnace and a cart. The work is a prime example of 16th-century geographical and historical documentation, which included illustrative vignettes of various industries and technologies.
Sebastian Munster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is best known for his Cosmographia, published in 1544, one of the earliest and most popular works to provide a comprehensive geographical and historical description of the world. The book was published in multiple languages and had numerous editions, making it a highly influential work of the 16th century.
