7273 Sebastian Munster (1488–1552) – Washing and Sorting Ore – Woodcut (c. 1550)
This woodcut is from Sebastian Münster's work Cosmographia. The illustration depicts two scenes from the mining industry: men washing ore (Kruckenwäschen) and men sorting ore (Wieber die Ertz slauben). The work is a prime example of 16th-century geographical and historical documentation, which included illustrative vignettes of various industries and technologies.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is best known for his Cosmographia, published in 1544, one of the earliest and most popular works to provide a comprehensive geographical and historical description of the world. The book was published in multiple languages and had numerous editions, making it a highly influential work of the 16th century.
