This hand-coloured engraving is an ornithological illustration of a little bittern from Switzerland. The work is from a series of plates known as Planches Enluminées d'Histoire Naturelle, which were part of a comprehensive natural history project. François Nicolas Martinet was a French engraver and naturalist.
