7195 Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Haste and Waiting for Time – Engraving (c. 1655)
This engraving is from the Dutch emblem book "Alle de Wercken" by Jacob Cats. Titled "Haeligheyt, en Tijt te verwagten" (Haste and Waiting for Time), the illustration depicts three men and a dog in what appears to be a workshop or domestic setting. The Latin motto "Il ferro chò no fa nodo, perde il punto" (The iron that does not tie, loses its point) reinforces the central message about the negative consequences of acting too quickly and the importance of allowing time for proper preparation.
Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture.
