7194 Jacob Cats (1577–1660) and A. T. van Someren – Domestic Matters – Engraving (c. 1655)
This engraving is from the Dutch emblem book "Alle de Wercken" by Jacob Cats. Titled "Huyselcke Saken" (Domestic Matters), the illustration depicts a group of figures attempting to get a stubborn donkey to cross a river or body of water. The scene visually represents the proverb "Wann den Esel zu wol ist/ so gehet er auff's Eiss tanzen," which means "When the donkey is too well off, it wants to dance on the ice." This conveys the moral lesson that with too much prosperity, a person can become difficult and unruly.
Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture. A. T. van Someren was a Dutch engraver who contributed illustrations to various publications in the 17th century.
