This engraving is from the Dutch emblem book "Alle de Wercken" by Jacob Cats. Titled "Staten en Ampte" (States and Offices), the illustration depicts a man removing a shoe while seated on a dais, with other figures standing around him. The image visually represents the proverb "Elck weet waer hem de schoen wzingt" (Everyone knows where the shoe pinches him), which highlights the idea that holding a high position of authority brings its own specific difficulties.

Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture.
