This detailed engraved map is a historical representation of Formosa (Taiwan) and the adjacent coast of China's Fujian Province. The chart, from Abbé Prévost’s Histoire générale des voyages, was compiled from "the most recent Maps and Observations" of the Jesuit Fathers. Abbé Antoine François Prévost was a French novelist and historian, best known for his novel Manon Lescaut. His most ambitious work was the monumental Histoire générale des voyages, which compiled and edited reports from global explorations. The work was highly influential, serving as a comprehensive source of information on geography, ethnography, and natural history for a wide European audience.
