This striking hand-colored engraving features the Lézard-Volant, or Flying Lizard, a member of the genus Draco, known for its ability to glide between trees using wing-like extensions of its ribs. Shown from a dorsal perspective with extended gliding membranes and a long tail trailing behind, the lizard is depicted in mid-motion, capturing its aerodynamic anatomy with scientific precision. This engraving reflects Martinet’s engagement not only with birds but also with exotic and lesser-known reptilian species.
François Martinet was a French engraver and illustrator active during the latter half of the 18th century. He is best known for his contributions to Buffon’s “Histoire Naturelle,” for which he produced hundreds of zoological plates. His engravings are valued for their detailed observation, graceful composition, and the vibrant hand-coloring that helped disseminate natural history knowledge across Enlightenment Europe.
