This vibrant hand-colored engraving titled Capricornes features three striking beetles: the Capricorne du Sénégal, the Capricorne du Canada, and the Buffon de Cayenne. Arranged in a taxonomic composition, the beetles are rendered with sharp anatomical precision, from the iridescent wing cases to the powerful mandibles of the central specimen. These longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) are notable for their elongated antennae and richly colored bodies, depicted here with Martinet’s refined aesthetic sensibility.

François Martinet was a French engraver and illustrator active during the latter half of the 18th century. He is best known for his contributions to Buffon’s “Histoire Naturelle,” producing detailed zoological illustrations that combine scientific accuracy with decorative elegance. His engravings remain among the most admired examples of Enlightenment-era natural history art.
