This finely rendered hand-colored engraving presents a vibrant array of butterfly species originally described in the 1805 publication Insectes recueillis en Afrique et en Amérique by Palisot de Beauvois. The illustration is by Jean-Gabriel Prêtre, a renowned French natural history artist noted for his precise and elegant representations of fauna. The plate was later reissued in the celebrated German series Bilderbuch für Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published by Carl Bertuch in Weimar around 1810.

Each specimen is meticulously detailed, highlighting the delicate structure, wing pattern, and chromatic variations typical of butterflies collected in tropical climates. Prêtre’s work reflects the intersection of Enlightenment science and early 19th-century artistic aesthetics, with a strong emphasis on visual education for young readers.
