6708 François Valentijn – Sultan of Moso (Mosoddien) – Copperplate Engraving – 1724

This original copperplate engraving by François Valentijn depicts the ruler of Moso (Mosoddien), seated beneath a richly decorated canopy and surrounded by his attendants. It comes from Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, a monumental Dutch publication documenting the East Indies through maps, ethnographic scenes, and zoological engravings. The scene exemplifies 18th-century Dutch colonial interest in portraying the nobility and ceremonial customs of Southeast Asian kingdoms, often combining observational detail with European artistic conventions. The engraving reflects the VOC’s efforts to record political structures across the Indonesian archipelago.
François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, historian, and VOC employee best known for his extensive work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, which compiled detailed descriptions of the Dutch East Indies. Valentijn spent significant time in the East Indies and combined first-hand observation with earlier sources to produce one of the most comprehensive 18th-century records of Southeast Asia. His work is celebrated both for its historical value and its elaborate illustrations.
