This copperplate engraving by Frederick de Wit features two stags depicted in separate panels, each in a distinct posture. The upper panel shows a healthy and alert specimen, while the lower presents an emaciated stag with richly detailed antlers and coat. The juxtaposition may reflect seasonal change, symbolic contrast, or anatomical study. The engraving demonstrates de Wit's characteristic precision and balance in zoological composition.

Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was a renowned Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher active during the Dutch Golden Age. Although best known for his maps and atlases, he also produced a series of natural history engravings that combined scientific accuracy with elegant design. His Amsterdam workshop played a central role in disseminating knowledge of geography and zoology across Europe in the 17th century.
