6694 Giuseppe Maria Terreni – Flying Squirrel and Hummingbird / Scoiattolo Volante dell'America Settentrionale & Colibrì Ciuffetto – Copperplate Engraving (1763)

This charming copperplate engraving from 1763 presents two North American species—a flying squirrel (Scoiattolo volante dell’America settentrionale) in the foreground and a crested hummingbird (Colibrì ciuffetto) perched behind. The squirrel is captured mid-meal, seated upright with its tail curled in a dramatic arc, displaying the patagium—a flap of skin used for gliding. The hummingbird is rendered with elegant precision, its long beak and perched posture contrasting with the squirrel's grounded bulk. Both creatures are surrounded by naturalistic foliage and a bare-branched tree, with a ribbon-like title banding floating in the sky.
This engraving was published in Livorno by Marco Coltellini in 1763 as part of a natural history volume. The plate is signed by Terreni, an Italian artist known for his zoological illustrations and landscape scenes. His engravings blend decorative charm with anatomical clarity, offering a valuable 18th-century perspective on exotic wildlife.
