6691 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Studies of Crested Birds – Copperplate Engraving (ca. 1650)

This detailed copperplate engraving by Frederick de Wit presents two pairs of exotic crested birds rendered in separate panels. The upper register features upright terrestrial birds with prominent plumes and defined tail feathers, while the lower panel depicts a pair of waterfowl with strong beaks and textured plumage. The engraving reflects 17th-century interest in ornithology and exotic zoological specimens, captured with clarity and formal restraint.
Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was one of the foremost Dutch engravers and publishers of the Golden Age, best known for his maps, atlases, and decorative prints. In addition to cartographic work, his Amsterdam studio produced natural history engravings that merged observational detail with refined composition. His works remain valued for their scientific and artistic contributions to early modern European knowledge.
