This detailed engraving, titled "ATABALIBA, fide accepta spe liberatum iri, ad diversa loca suos ablegat afferendi auri & argenti causâ." (Atahualpa, having accepted faith and hoping to be liberated, sends his people to various places for the sake of bringing gold and silver), is a historical plate from Part VI of Theodor de Bry's America, published in 1596. The print depicts a chaotic scene of tribute gathering and plunder, illustrating the Inca emperor Atahualpa's attempt to buy his freedom from the Spanish conquistadors by offering a massive ransom of gold and silver. The scene captures the frantic efforts of his people to fulfill the demand, set against a backdrop of European architectural elements and bustling activity.

Theodor de Bry (1528–1598) was a prominent Flemish engraver, goldsmith, and publisher, best known for his comprehensive collection of illustrated travel narratives, "Grands Voyages" (also known as Collectiones Peregrinationum in Indiam Orientalem et Occidentalem), particularly the "America" series. Along with his sons Johann Theodor de Bry (1561–1623) and Johann Israel de Bry (1565–1609), he created a monumental visual archive of early European explorations and encounters with the New World, often based on eyewitness accounts and earlier drawings. Their workshop engravings are celebrated for their detailed historical and ethnographic content.
