6639 Charles Blunt (1803–1878) – Nimbus, or Rain Cloud – Hand-Coloured Lithograph (1845)

This dramatic hand-coloured lithograph portrays the Nimbus, or rain cloud, rising dark and heavy over a calm harbour scene. Against the grey cloud mass arcs a vivid rainbow, its spectral colours reflected in the water below. Sailboats with Dutch flags and figures wading near the shoreline lend the image a dynamic, lived-in atmosphere, while the meteorological formation looms as a visual and scientific focal point. Designated “No. 103”, this plate is part of Charles Blunt’s celebrated The Beauty of the Heavens, a 19th-century visual exploration of sky phenomena.
Charles Blunt was a British science communicator and illustrator whose works made astronomy and meteorology visually accessible to the public. His lithographs merged artistic composition with observational learning, allowing viewers to appreciate cloud types not only for their weather significance but also for their aesthetic impact. Today, these prints stand as rare examples of early educational natural science imagery.
