This original engraved map, titled "HASSIA Landtgraviatvs." (Landgraviate of Hesse), was produced by Hendrik Hondius. Published in Amsterdam in 1640, the map provides a highly detailed depiction of the historical region of Hesse, within the Holy Roman Empire. It intricately illustrates a dense network of towns, villages, rivers, and topographical features, reflecting the advanced cartographic knowledge and meticulous engraving typical of 17th-century Dutch mapmaking.

Hendrik Hondius (1573–1650) was a prominent Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher, a key figure in the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. He is best known for his role in expanding and continuing the atlases originally created by Gerard Mercator, notably through the publication of the "Atlas Novus" or "Atlas Major" series. Hondius's maps were highly regarded for their precision, clarity, and decorative qualities, contributing significantly to the dissemination of geographical knowledge across Europe.
