This elegant, originally hand-coloured engraving depicts the Pleuronectes Malachius, also known as the small flounder, with subtle golden-brown tones, fine scale texture, and delicate fin structure. The image is part of Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière des Poissons, one of the most celebrated ichthyological works of the Enlightenment. Published in Berlin, Paris, and London between 1785 and 1788, Bloch’s engravings combine scientific precision with visual refinement and remain key references in the history of natural science illustration.
Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German physician and naturalist, considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century. He devoted much of his life to cataloging fish species, combining scientific descriptions with visually captivating engravings. His Ichthyologie series documented over 200 new species and remains a cornerstone in the study of marine biology and zoological art.
