6533 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of the Cape of Good Hope – Copperplate Engraving – c.1748
This detailed copperplate engraving depicts Table Bay and the anchorage of the Cape of Good Hope, a key maritime point for European expeditions rounding southern Africa. The chart, created by renowned French hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, shows coastal features, anchor points, and soundings, illustrating the strategic importance of the Cape in 18th-century navigation and trade. The engraving was executed by Jakob van der Schley and published in the Dutch edition of the "Histoire générale des voyages" by Antoine-François Prévost, printed by Pieter de Hondt in The Hague.
Bellin served as chief cartographer to the French Navy and was known for his methodical and highly accurate coastal surveys. His work laid the foundation for later European cartography in both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean regions. Jakob van der Schley, who engraved this map, was a distinguished Dutch artist and pupil of Bernard Picart.
