This original copperplate engraving, titled Mechanics Tab VI, was issued in 1790 by the London publisher Alex. Hogg as part of the New Royal Cyclopaedia and Encyclopaedia. The plate illustrates advanced mechanical systems and devices from the late 18th century, including compound pulley systems, gear assemblies, lever constructions, and other components related to force distribution and motion. Each diagram is finely engraved and labeled, providing detailed visual instruction for the study of classical mechanics.

Plates such as this one were essential to early engineering education and reflect the Enlightenment’s emphasis on rational design, utility, and technical mastery. These encyclopedic engravings were widely used by scholars, inventors, and practitioners seeking visual clarity in applied physics.
