This finely executed copperplate engraving by Isaac Taylor illustrates the muscular system of the human body as part of a series titled Anatomy, Part IV – Myology. The plate presents eight anatomical figures, including full-body views of superficial and deep muscle layers (anterior and posterior), as well as detailed studies of individual muscle fibers and structural cross-sections.

The poses reflect the classical tradition of anatomical illustration, showing flayed figures in dynamic contrapposto, allowing for maximum visibility of muscle groups and anatomical landmarks. Such engravings were used extensively in medical training during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and represent a key moment in the visual history of anatomy.

Taylor’s engravings were part of a broader trend toward standardized, scientifically accurate didactic tools intended for both students and practicing physicians.
