6478 Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) – Costumes of Kurds and Persians – Hand-colored Copperplate Engraving (1810)
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Trachten. XII. Costumes. XII. Garments. XII. Vestimenta. XII.", originates from Carl Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1810. The print depicts four figures showcasing traditional attire: a Mountain Kurd with cudgel and shield (figure 1), a Persian man in a silk summer outfit (figure 2), and two Persian women in shawls or turbans, tunics, and pantaloons (figures 3 and 4). This illustration served an educational and ethnographic purpose, typical of Bertuch's work, providing visual information about diverse peoples and their traditional costumes from various parts of the world.
Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was an influential German publisher, writer, and patron of the arts, active during the late Enlightenment and Romantic periods. He is best known for his comprehensive and popular encyclopedic works aimed at educating children and the general public, most notably "Bilderbuch für Kinder" (1790-1830). This multi-volume series contained thousands of hand-colored engravings depicting natural history, geography, technology, and human cultures from around the world, making Bertuch a key figure in the dissemination of knowledge and visual culture in Europe.
