6477 Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711) – The Death of Pyramus – Engraving (late 17th to early 18th century)

This striking engraving, designed by Gérard de Lairesse, depicts the tragic scene of Pyramus's death from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The male figure lies wounded and partially nude, with an arrow in his chest, suggesting his fatal encounter. A spear rests nearby, and a shield is visible in the lower right, grounding the scene in classical antiquity. De Lairesse's masterful composition conveys the drama and pathos of the mythological narrative through meticulous linework and chiaroscuro.
Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711) was a highly influential Dutch Golden Age painter, art theorist, and etcher.
Initially a pupil of his father and later Jacob van Loo, he became known for his refined classical style, often drawing inspiration from French Baroque art. De Lairesse specialized in historical and allegorical subjects, producing numerous paintings and designs for prints that significantly influenced painting and decorative arts in the Netherlands and beyond. His theoretical writings, such as "Het Groot Schilderboek," also solidified his legacy.
