6464 John Hawkesworth – A View in the Island of Huaheine – Original Copperplate Engraving – 1773

This copperplate engraving presents a tranquil coastal view of the island of Huaheine (now Huahine, part of French Polynesia), as seen during Captain James Cook’s first Pacific voyage. The composition shows a gently sloping shoreline with palm trees, Polynesian canoes approaching land, and thatched dwellings nestled beneath lush vegetation. The scene reflects both the natural beauty of the Society Islands and the daily life of their inhabitants, offering an idealized yet observationally grounded view of the South Pacific.
The engraving was published in 1773 in An Account of the Voyages…, edited by John Hawkesworth, and based on the sketches and notes of crew members aboard the Endeavour, including artist Sydney Parkinson. The view of Huaheine was among the earliest European visual records of the island, created shortly after Cook's anchoring there in 1769.
John Hawkesworth (c.1715–1773) was a British writer commissioned by the Admiralty to compile the official account of British exploratory voyages to the Southern Hemisphere. His multi-volume work became a landmark publication of the Enlightenment, combining geographical discovery with rich ethnographic and natural detail.
