6463 William Hodges – A View in the Island of Rotterdam – Original Copperplate Engraving – 1777

This copperplate engraving presents a serene coastal landscape on the island of Rotterdam (now Nomuka, in the Haʻapai group of Tonga), as observed during Captain James Cook’s second voyage to the Pacific. The composition, based on a drawing by expedition artist William Hodges, shows tall palms lining the shore, a native canoe approaching the beach, and distant island vegetation under a calm sky. The image evokes the peacefulness and natural harmony of Polynesian island life as witnessed by 18th-century European explorers.
The print was published in the official account of Cook’s second voyage, issued in London in 1777, and illustrates the visual documentation gathered during the Resolution’s journey. William Hodges accompanied Cook as the expedition’s artist and produced some of the earliest and most influential visual representations of the South Pacific.
William Hodges (1744–1797) was a British painter and draughtsman who served as the official artist on Cook’s second voyage (1772–1775). His on-site sketches were later engraved for publication and played a critical role in shaping European perceptions of the Pacific. His style combined topographical accuracy with atmospheric sensitivity, capturing both landscape and cultural context with rare elegance.
