This original copperplate engraving comes from the first edition of L’Histoire naturelle éclaircie dans deux de ses parties principales, la lithologie et la conchyliologie, published in Paris in 1742 by De Bure l’Aîné. The engraving, titled Fluors, Congélations, Pétrifications, is part of a scientifically and artistically significant series that illustrates mineral specimens and fossilized forms. It depicts crystalline formations referred to as “Fluor métallique,” as well as petrified marine and terrestrial specimens, all labeled and rendered with extraordinary detail.

The composition was designed by François Boucher, one of the leading Rococo painters of the 18th century, and engraved by Quentin Pierre Chedel, a noted French printmaker. Their collaboration resulted in some of the most visually refined natural history illustrations of the Enlightenment era.
