This detailed hand-colored engraving presents a scientific study of various spiny plants and shrubs. The print features a prominent branch laden with dark berries and green leaves, likely a type of Buckthorn. To its right, a plant with a large, spiny, globe-like fruit or root structure and intricate root system is meticulously depicted. The plate also includes illustrations of a smaller plant with yellowish leaves and roots, and a tall slender plant with tiny flowers. The multilingual caption identifies various species, such as "Spina Celtica" (Spanish Spiny Plant), "Spina urens" (Burning Spiny Plant), and "Spina solstitialis" (Summer Solstice Spiny Plant). This work is characteristic of comprehensive 18th-century botanical encyclopedias, showcasing diverse plant forms from root to fruit.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanist, renowned for his monumental botanical compilation, Phytanthoza-Iconographia. Published in multiple volumes between 1737 and 1745, this work was one of the earliest and most ambitious attempts to illustrate a vast array of plants from around the world. Although Weinmann compiled the work, the exquisite plates were often based on designs by notable botanical artists and executed by skilled engravers. His Phytanthoza-Iconographia remains a significant achievement in botanical illustration, celebrated for its scientific detail and aesthetic quality, and it played a crucial role in the dissemination of botanical knowledge during the Enlightenment.
