This detailed chromolithograph presents two distinct studies of waterfowl. The upper illustration depicts "die zimmtfarbige Ente oder Mandarin Ente" (The Cinnamon-colored Duck or Mandarin Duck, Anas Galericulata), a highly ornamental species, shown perched in a naturalistic setting with an Asian-style pagoda in the background. The lower illustration features "die gemeine Löffel Ente" (The Common Shoveler Duck, Rhynchaspis clypeata), characterized by its distinctive large, spatulate bill, shown foraging in water amidst grass. Both birds are rendered with scientific accuracy and lifelike detail. This print originates from a comprehensive ornithological work, reflecting the detailed zoological classifications and visual documentation of its time.

Leopold Fitzinger was a prominent Austrian zoologist and naturalist, particularly renowned for his contributions to herpetology and mammalogy, as well as his extensive work in ornithology. He served in various capacities at the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna. Fitzinger authored numerous scientific publications, which included detailed illustrations of animal species. His work played a significant role in the systematic classification and popular dissemination of zoological knowledge in the mid-19th century, influencing both scientific and public understanding of the natural world. This print was lithographed and colored by the Imperial and Royal Court and State Printing House (K.K. Hof und Staatsdruckerei) in Vienna.
