Marcus Elieser Bloch was a prominent German physician and one of the most significant ichthyologists of the 18th century. He is celebrated for his monumental 12-volume work, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische (General Natural History of Fish), published between 1782 and 1795. This ambitious project documented hundreds of fish species, both freshwater and marine, from around the world, featuring exquisitely detailed and often hand-colored illustrations.
