This compelling engraving, from the "Of Monsters and Prodigies" section, features two distinct illustrations detailing unusual human anatomical anomalies. The upper image depicts a "barrid Monster" or bearded monster, characterized by hairy feet and hands, and calf-like features. The lower illustration showcases an infant with a facial deformity resembling that of a hog. Both depictions are accompanied by English text providing accounts of these births, reflecting the early modern fascination with and attempts to document natural curiosities. This print offers a revealing glimpse into 16th-century interpretations of biological variations and their place in broader scientific and popular understanding.

Ambroise Paré was an eminent French surgeon, anatomist, and one of the fathers of modern surgery. Beyond his medical treatises, he also engaged with unusual natural phenomena, compiling the influential work Des Monstres et Prodiges ("Of Monsters and Prodigies"), first published in 1573. In this work, Paré cataloged and described various anomalies—from congenital malformations to mythical creatures—attempting to explain their causes from a medical and philosophical perspective. His contributions were highly significant for the development of both medicine and natural history.
