This engraving of a reclining female nude was created by Crispin van de Passe II in 1643 as part of the fifth section of the monumental drawing manual La prima [-quinta] parte della luce del dipingere et disegnare (The First to the Fifth Part of the Light of Painting and Drawing), published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansz. The image exemplifies the instructional approach to female anatomy in early modern art education, depicting a sensuous and anatomically precise figure posed on rumpled bedding. Crispin van de Passe II (1594–1670), also known as Crispijn de Passe II, was a prominent Dutch engraver and printmaker from the van de Passe family of artists. Trained in the workshop of his father in Cologne and later active in Utrecht and Amsterdam, he became known for his refined technique and for publishing influential instructional works on drawing. His contribution to printed artistic education, especially with La luce del dipingere et disegnare, remains a key legacy of 17th-century art theory.
