5995 Crispin van de Passe II - Reclining Nude with Drapery and Vessels – 1643 – Engraving

This copperplate engraving by Crispin van de Passe II depicts a reclining female nude arranged languidly across a bed with voluminous drapery, her left arm raised behind her head and her gaze directed outward. Beneath her, heavy fabric cascades to the floor, where vessels—possibly symbolic of sensual indulgence or vanitas—lie overturned. The engraving comes from the fifth part of La prima [-quinta] parte della luce del dipingere et disegnare, an extensive 1643–44 Amsterdam publication authored and illustrated by van de Passe II. Serving both as academic study and aesthetic object, the work reflects the artist’s refined approach to anatomy, texture, and classical composition in service of artistic training.

Active in Utrecht and Amsterdam, he was a key figure in the production of instructional art books during the Dutch Golden Age. His major publication La luce del dipingere et disegnare aimed to provide aspiring artists with rigorous models of human form and gesture, influencing generations of European draughtsmen.
