This detailed engraved map, titled "CARTE DES ISLES NOUVELLE ZEMBLE, Ou Nouvelle Holande, Dressée sur les Descriptions des Navigateurs." (Map of the Islands of Novaya Zemlya, or New Holland, Drawn from the Descriptions of the Navigators), was created by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. Published in 1758, this map provides an intricate depiction of Novaya Zemlya (often historically referred to as Nouvelle Zemble) and surrounding Arctic regions, including parts of Siberia and the coast of Norway. It meticulously details coastlines, straits (like Detroit de Vaigats), and other geographical features based on contemporary navigators' reports, reflecting 18th-century European efforts to chart and understand the northern polar areas.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was a highly influential French cartographer, hydrographer, and geographer. He served as the first Ingénieur de la Marine and Royal Hydrographer to the King of France, responsible for producing a vast number of charts and maps that were widely regarded for their accuracy and detail. Bellin's work was instrumental in documenting global coastlines and waterways, contributing significantly to navigation and geographical knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment. His prolific output included atlases like the Petit Atlas Maritime and individual charts that were used by navies and merchant fleets worldwide.
