This detailed engraved map, titled "PLAN DE LA VILLE DE PEKING Capitale de L'Empire de la Chine située par les 39. 54°. de Lat. Septle." (Plan of the City of Peking, Capital of the Empire of China situated at 39° 54' N. Lat.), was created by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. Published in 1757, this map provides an intricate urban plan of Beijing (Peking), clearly delineating the distinct sections of the "VILLE TARTARE" (Tartar City) and the "VILLE CHINOISE" (Chinese City). It showcases the city's monumental layout, including key architectural features and a grid system, reflecting 18th-century European cartographic efforts to document the Chinese capital.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was a highly influential French cartographer, hydrographer, and geographer. He served as the first Ingénieur de la Marine and Royal Hydrographer to the King of France, responsible for producing a vast number of charts and maps that were widely regarded for their accuracy and detail. Bellin's work was instrumental in documenting global coastlines and significant urban centers, contributing significantly to navigation and geographical knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment. His prolific output included atlases like the Petit Atlas Maritime and maps for multi-volume travel compilations.
