This engraving features two unusual serpentine forms: Le Lombric, depicted with a smooth, elongated body reminiscent of an earthworm, and a striking serpent monstrueux à deux têtes, or two-headed snake, a rare and dramatic natural curiosity. The engraving emphasizes the anatomical strangeness of both specimens, rendered with elegant, sinuous lines and shadowed forms. Produced for Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, the plate captures Enlightenment fascination with rare and malformed creatures that challenged natural classification systems.

Jacques de Sève was one of the principal illustrators of Buffon’s monumental natural history volumes. His engravings combined scientific purpose with graphic clarity, and he was particularly skilled in presenting both the beauty and peculiarity of the animal world to a wide public.
