5143 Frederik de Wit (1629–1706) – Map of Moguntinum and Surrounding Territories – Copperplate Engraving (Late 17th Century)
This detailed copperplate engraving by Frederik de Wit shows the Archbishopric of Mainz (Moguntinum), including Darmstadt, Worms, Frankfurt am Main, and numerous other towns and regions along the middle Rhine. The map is filled with topographical features such as rivers, forests, and elevation hatching, and includes an elaborate title cartouche flanked by allegorical figures and cherubs. The precision and decorative richness are typical of de Wit’s cartographic work and reflect the artistic and geographic standards of late 17th-century Dutch mapmaking.
Frederik de Wit was one of the most prominent Dutch engravers and publishers of the 17th century.
