210 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Study of Tropical Plants and Colonial Exchange – Copperplate Engraving (1726)

This copperplate engraving, published in François Valentijn’s Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1726), presents a combination of botanical and ethnographic content. The upper section of the sheet features four botanical studies, likely native Southeast Asian plants and fruits, each labeled with a reference number and drawn in a precise scientific style. These studies reflect the Enlightenment-era desire to catalogue exotic flora encountered during colonial expeditions.
The lower half of the sheet depicts an interaction between Dutch colonial officers and indigenous people, possibly involving the exchange of local specimens or trade goods. The background suggests a tropical landscape with volcanic mountains, palm trees, and coastline, characteristic of the East Indies.
François Valentijn was a Dutch minister and naturalist whose monumental work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën synthesized geography, natural science, ethnography, and colonial history. The engravings from this work serve as early visual records of Southeast Asia and its people, flora, and fauna.
