209 James Sowerby (1757–1822) – Set of 8 Botanical Studies – Alpine Grimmia & Sea-Heath – Hand-Coloured Engravings (1790–1814)

This superb set of eight original hand-coloured engravings comes from English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published by J. Davis in London between 1790 and 1814. The prints represent a diverse range of plant and cryptogam species, including Beardless Alpine Grimmia (Grimmia alpicola), Forsterian Grimmia (Grimmia forsteri), Pale Mountain Polypody (Polypodium phegopteris), Upright Spear-leaved Orache (Atriplex erecta), Powdery Sea-Heath (Frankenia pulverulenta), Cohering Conferva (Conferva mirabilis), Elm Lichen (Lichen ulmi), and Greenish Horny-tubercled Lichen (Lichen viridescens).
James Sowerby’s work is regarded as a cornerstone of early British botanical science. His hand-coloured engravings combine scientific precision with an elegant illustrative style that brought complex plant forms to life for botanists, students, and collectors.
