This rare set of eight hand-coloured engravings is from English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published by J. Davis in London between 1790 and 1814. The selection focuses on mosses and liverworts, including multiple species of the genus Jungermannia, alongside flowering and non-vascular plants. Species in this set include Curly Cudweed (Gnaphalium rectum), Tassel Hyacinth (Cucubalus otites), Starkian Fork-moss (Dicranum starkii), and five distinct species of Jungermannia: radicans, minuta, concinnata, spinulosa, and pumila.

James Sowerby was one of the leading figures of botanical illustration in Britain. His highly detailed engravings, coloured by hand, brought both scientific accuracy and artistic elegance to early plant documentation, contributing greatly to the accessibility of British botanical knowledge.
