197 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Convolvulus with Blue and Orange Flowers – Engraving (18th Century)

This beautifully hand-coloured folio engraving depicts two varieties of Convolvulus, also known as bindweed or morning glory: one with pale blue blossoms (flore caeruleo) and the other with smaller, bright orange-red flowers (flore parve aurantio). The composition highlights the curling stems, lush green leaves, and fine botanical details, including a view of the root structure. The plate is numbered 942 and comes from the renowned Phytanthoza Iconographia, one of the most ambitious botanical publications of the 18th century, issued in Regensburg under the direction of Weinmann, with illustrations by a young Georg Dionysius Ehret.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia marked a breakthrough in botanical illustration through the use of mezzotint and hand-colouring. Many plates were drawn or influenced by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would go on to revolutionize botanical art with his refined and lifelike compositions. Together, their work laid the foundation for modern botanical representation.
