30 Christoph Weigel – Map of Upper Saxony / Saxoniae Superioris – Hand-Coloured Engraving (1724)

This finely engraved map of Upper Saxony (Saxoniae Superioris) was published by Christoph Weigel in Nuremberg in 1724. The map features vivid original hand-colouring outlining the political boundaries within the region, which includes parts of modern-day Saxony, Thuringia, and northern Bavaria. A decorative cartouche in the upper right corner, embellished with allegorical figures, anchors the composition in the Baroque visual language of early 18th-century German cartography.
Weigel (1654–1725), an engraver and publisher active in Nuremberg, was known for his detailed atlases and elaborate visual presentation. His maps were frequently issued in historical and geographical compendia and stand out for their clear typography and decorative flourishes.
