This remarkable copperplate engraving comes from Jacob L’Admiral’s rare entomological work Naauwkeurige waarneemingen, van veele gestaltverwisselende gekorvene diertjes (Accurate Observations of Many Morphologically Changing Insects), published around 1744 in Amsterdam. The composition combines botanical and entomological observation, featuring a striped tulip in full bloom surrounded by various insects in different stages of metamorphosis, including caterpillars, pupae, and a hovering moth. The engraving presents an intricate harmony between plant and insect life, showcasing Enlightenment-era scientific curiosity.

Jacob L’Admiral was a Dutch naturalist and artist known for his precise and finely detailed studies of insects. Though most copies of his plates were hand-colored, this is a rare monochrome impression retaining all the finely engraved detail without overprint.
