4886 Jacques de Sève – Le Renard – Copperplate Engraving from Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle (18th Century)

This original copperplate engraving of a fox (Le Renard) was created by Jacques de Sève for Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle. Published in Paris in the mid-to-late 18th century, this encyclopedic work was among the most influential natural history publications of its time. The composition features the fox in a domestic village setting, subtly contrasting the wild nature of the animal with human settlement.
De Sève (active 1740s–1780s) was the principal illustrator for Buffon’s mammal volumes, known for his lifelike renderings, finely detailed line work, and elegant scenery.
