4885 Jacques de Sève – Le Tapir – Copperplate Engraving from Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle (18th Century)

This antique copperplate engraving of a tapir (Le Tapir) was drawn by the celebrated French illustrator Jacques de Sève and engraved for the monumental Histoire Naturelle by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. Published in Paris during the 18th century, this encyclopedic work sought to classify the animal kingdom in a richly illustrated scientific context. The print is marked “Tome XI, Pl. XLIII, Page 448” and presents the tapir in profile, standing against a lightly etched landscape with Buffon’s characteristic composition style.
Jacques de Sève (fl. mid-18th century) was one of the primary illustrators of Buffon’s series, known for blending anatomical accuracy with an elegant pictorial sensibility. His works remain prized for their scientific legacy and visual refinement.
