This fine botanical engraving is taken from François Valentijn’s Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, one of the most extensive Dutch works documenting the natural history and ethnography of the East Indies. This particular plate features fourteen labeled illustrations (Nos. CVIII to CXXI), presenting climbing plants, seed pods, tropical foliage, fruits, and root structures native to Southeast Asia.

The engravings reflect the early 18th-century scientific ambition to classify and visually document the plant diversity encountered in colonial territories. Carefully rendered in copperplate, the drawings emphasize diagnostic plant traits with strong linear definition and taxonomic focus, characteristic of early botanical illustration from the Age of Exploration.
